Sports Mouth Guards
Sport is a big part of growing up and a big part of the Aussie culture. Sometimes these sports can cause injuries and this is why we recommend a professionally fitted mouth guard. A sports mouthguard is a thick, spongy shield that fits over the teeth. They are usually worn during sports that involve a high risk of impact to the face. An injury can result in a loss of one or more teeth, broken or chipped teeth, jaw fractures or injuries to the soft tissue of the mouth. According to the Australian Dental Association (ADA), about one-third of traumatic injuries to teeth are sports-related. Sports Medicine Association Australia suggests that 50% of children experience some form of dental injury. This can be prevented by the use of a custom fitted mouthguard every time you play or train.
The mouthguard acts as a buffer for impacts. The spongy material helps to absorb the shock and lessen the force applied to your teeth, jaws or skull. A custom fitted mouthguard provides the best protection for the teeth. The Dental Prosthetist takes an impression of your teeth and makes a plaster model to get the closest possible fit. The mouthguard needs to be at least 4mm thick, with a cushioning effect that provides protection against impact. It fits snugly so it’s still possible to talk – an important aspect during an intense match. Mr Barry Rogers and Dr Rafaela Rogers offer custom made and professionally fitted mouthguard for schools and sports clubs. Our mouth guards are unique, as they allow the lower jaw to 'lock' into the mouthguard, providing double protection, not only of the upper teeth but the lower jaw and face too.
